I created the site in April of 2006 and wrote a web-spider to gather lyrics to 200,000 songs and a wiki-bot to insert them. This started the site with a critical mass. Since then, have created a SOAP API to give free access through many other programs (music player plugins and many other sites). The site now has 650,000 pages and thousands of contributors and serves more than 1.25 million lyrics requests per day.
