On each project page there are sections "Related Projects by Tags" and "People who use Foo also use" (capitalization rule mismatch there, BTW). These are handy. Something I would also like to see is ... [More] "Competitor Projects". For instance, what are all the DVR projects that have similar functionality as MythTV? Distributed source control systems that are similar to Mercurial? Enterprise software management systems that are similar to Chef? For example: there are hundreds of tags assigned to the MythTV project; clicking through each one to find similar projects is thus not doable. Choosing one likely tag "PVR" (which is very difficult to find in the non-alphabetized list, plus you have to "know" the problem domain to know the tag) shows a mix of symbiotic projects (mythbuntu) and one competitor (XBMC). After a time I realize there's a "MythTV" tag "and'ed" on, and remove it, and then also see Freevo. This is far from an optimal way to find project competitors. I hope you will consider adding this feature. As an end user, I am highly interested in knowing all competing software solutions/projects for a given domain. It helps me keep abreast of "up-and-comers", and to know when certain platforms are fading into oblivion. [Less]
