This site is just full of good data; it'd be great to have something like Flickr's "interesting" page:

Judging projects based purely on popularity makes sense for some cases, but there have got to be other ways to judge projects, and it'd be great to have a more general exploration mechanism.

You can list "top gainers" - though projects with 100+ 'diggs' should be excluded! You can list new projects (newly listed)
Flickr's interesting page is probably a list of favorites of some moderators.
I guess another thing is checking out user's favorite lists and finding software this way.
But there's probably no way of easily finding underdogs, as long as they're underdogs (I'm talking about underrated software)

A good idea. My guess is that the best way to uncover interesting projects would be to introduce an absolute kudo ranking (firefox would be first, subversion second, etc...) Then, we could expose the week/month's hot movers - that is, projects that move up the charts by the most spots. What do you think?
We realize there's a lot more going on under the covers here at Ohloh than our UI reveals. A fancy way of saying that our we're due for a website redesign.
We've been prototyping a new UI over the last few weeks, which should launch sometime in January. One of its primary goals is to simplify our site and to expose more data.

All I can say for sure, is that I do not need the information, that firefox is popular any more.
I guess "absolute favorite" is not what should be shown by default, instead the "top gainer" would be more interesting. You just have to insert the right limits/conditions, so the list we're talking about (some way of list which somehow represents some perspective on the popularity of projects) will change at least twice a week.
Otherwise one might get the impression that the main page is static (at least that particular list) =)
