Waiting in queue: more information

This has been brought up before, but I thought I'd add my voice to the choir.

The "waiting in queue" message is highly annoying, primarily because it gives _no_ additional feedback regarding completion time. FWIW: I've been waiting for a project to be enlisted for more than a day now. It's not a big repo (stacy is fairly young, r27). This would be much less annoying if there was some kind of progress info, like queue position.

Thanks for your consideration,

Hi Feep,

I hear your frustration. The Ohloh job queue is a fickle and unpredictable beast.

Unfortunately, even once you are "in the queue" there really is no way to know when you will be run. There is no fixed sequence for jobs -- they are selected opportunistically depending on available hardware and the type and size of the job.

This weekend was an especially unfortunate time to be waiting around, because our job queue was stopped for about 48 hours both because of hardware problems and some administration tasks. Some projects have been in the queue for 5-6 days now, although we should be catching up soon.

There's some information about how our scheduling works and a histogram showing the length of the queue on this page.

You're right, we should have better feedback about the state of the job queue and how long the wait is going to be -- but this isn't as easy as it might seem.

Thanks, Robin
