It should be possible to add a position even if ohloh can't find a committer of the given name. Some projects don't give commit access to their contributors.
You can already do this: just click "New" under "Experience", which will take you to the "New Position" form. You can fill out that form for contributions to a project even if that project doesn't list you as a committer. You won't get credit for it in terms of KudoRank or on the project's page, but the project will show up in your profile with the description you gave.
To extend this further, several people have proposed various means of assigning contributors to commits not made under their name, either in an automated fashion via text parsing in the commit message or manually by claiming individual commits. I would love to see that as well.
