ZenOSS got great potential

    by Trygve Vea

But it seems like a very unstable piece of software so far. We've kept paying attention to ZenOSS from prior 1.0, until 2.0.3 (which is the most recent version available today).

We see that regressions keep appearing between releases.

On the other hand though, it has as previously mentioned great potential, and will probably one day become a great monitoring tool.

Best Network/Systems Management Platform!

  by chet

Prior to discovering Zenoss I had been a long time Nagios user. I had dabbled in the other major open source players in this arena as well, including Big Brother, Munin, Hyperic and Groundwork.

After 4 years of writing Nagios customizations I was a little disappointed to learn that Zenoss already did everything I had spent so much time developing, and MUCH more straight out of the box.

To top all of this off, Zenoss has the ... [More] backing of a real company. Not only does this provide the obvious advantage of having a support channel standing behind the product, but more importantly it allows for a very aggressive release schedule. I've lost count of the number of times I asked, or even thought of a feature I would love to see only to see it exist in the latest release.

If you're looking for an all-in-one network & systems management platform with event management and a configuration database, this just could be the only valid option out there unless you have the bucks to have HP or IBM come in a develop something for you. [Less]

#5287: Concurrent Access error when moving devices to another class

    Description

Frequently users are seeing "Concurrent Access" errors in the web interface when attempting to move multiple devices from one device to another.

    Build Version: 2.4.2
    Operating System(s): Any/All
    Support Case #: ... [More] 7882
    Steps to Reproduce
Start with a system containing 20+ active devices
    Start zenmodeler: zenmodeler run --now
Immediately while zenmodeler is running try to move as many devices as possible from one device class to another using the menu on the source device class
    Results

You will get a "Concurrent Access" error in the web interface and none of the devices will be moved.

    Expected Results

No concurrent access error, and the devices should be moved.

    Impact

Inability to bulk reclassify devices. [Less]

#5285: Devices with blank manageIp cause zenmodeler to fail

    Description

If you create a device with a blank manageIp and zSnmpMonitorIgnore is set to False you will prevent zenmodeler from performing its normal 12 hour modeling cycle.

    Build Version: 2.4.2
    Operating System(s): ... [More] Any/All
    Support Case #: 7778
    Steps to Reproduce
Find a device that is being monitored with SNMP
Set its manageIp to a blank value. You can use zendmd to do this.
    find("deviceName").manageIp = ""
Try to model the device with -v10: zenmodeler run -v10 --device=deviceName
    Results

You will get the following messages in the log.

2009-07-06 07:52:15 DEBUG zen.SnmpClient: Starting SNMP info for deviceName at :161 timeout: 2.5 tries: 2 version: v1 community: public
    2009-07-06 07:52:15 ERROR netsnmp: snmp_open: Unknown host (:161)
2009-07-06 07:52:15 ERROR zen.ZenModeler: Unable to fill collection slots: [Failure instance: Traceback (failure with no frames): pynetsnmp.netsnmp.SnmpError: snmp_open
    ]
    Expected Results

    No errors in the modeling.

    Impact

When zenmodeler attempts to model this device as part of the normal modeling cycle it will fail, and disrupt the continued operation of zenmodeler. This is an exceptionally high impact because heartbeats will continue to come in from zenmodeler so the failure will not be noticed. [Less]

zenoss: @cosine You are correct, Zenoss has a CMDB, just not an ITIL compliant one.
