SPAGO BI: the Business Intelligence Free Platform

    by bernabei

SpagoBI covers and satisfies the whole range of BI requirements, both in terms of analysis and of data management, administration and security.
In the analytical world it offers solutions for static reporting, multidimensional and dynamics analysis (OLAP), hidden information discovering by means of Data mining techniques, Dashboards to monitor the business performance indicators (KPI) in a real-time or deferred way. It also provides ... [More] analytical modules for the collaborative processes handling, to compose a shared analytical Dossier with the personal annotation and contribution of all the involved people. Add personal notes and share comments is also possible directly on every analytical document. SpagoBI releases the QbE (Query by example) module, to free inquiry data, export data and generate some report template; it supports the publication of data on geografic support and the processes of extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) of the data. All the integrated and devolped engines share the same behavioral model, which regulates the
presentation of the analytical document and the visibilty over documents and data.

SpagoBI for the END-USER
All the analytical engines (Reporting, OLAP, Data Mining, Dashboard) are integrated in an overall vision, allowing:
· to navigate in an analytical area or between different ones, inheriting the reached point of view.
· to use different tools (in a alternative or a parallel way) for different analytical area but also inside the same one (several engines of Reporting or Data Mining) in order to create the best solution.
· to abstract the concepts which regulate the analysis and consolidate a representative model for the enterprise reality.
· to publish the analytical information on the basis of users’ roles and business criteria.
· to save customized view starting from the standard ones, in order to offer different freedom degrees in the movement through data.
· to organize logically the documents according to private views, or public ones, bounded to user’s roles.
· to publish certified information in a single portal environment.

SpagoBI for the ADMINISTRATOR
SpagoBI supports the administrator of the Business Intelligence portal in the configuration of engines, in the building of the functional tree, in the setting of visibility policies, in the extraordinary maintenance of analytical documents and in the version/environment migration by means of import/export capability. It also provide a scheduler for deferred execution of analytical documents.

SpagoBI for the DEVELOPER
The developer designs the new analytical documents and registers them in the platform, contributing to build the global behavioural model. He reuses all presentation and validation rules, in relation to users’ roles.

Relation with proprietary tools
Main features:
· integration with major proprietary products (like Business Objects, MS Analysis Services, WebSpherePortal), by means of specific drivers.
· independent and autonomous management of parameters.
· open adoption of different products (both open source and not) for the same analytical area.
· open standards adoption (as JSR 168, JSR 170).

Value of the integration
SpagoBI is an integration platform for enterprise solutions of BI, entirely developed in the FOSS philosophy.
It’s a platform because covers and satisfies all the BI requirements. It’s an integration platform:
· it is not a product platform, closed around a predefined set of tools.
· it’s opened to many products for the same/different analytical area, using open source or proprietary product too.
· it allows to compose one’s own platform time by time in the best way.
· it has not binding dependence from products and tools.
· it adopts Open standard.
· it allows to be focused on specific analytical questions and choose the best engine for every user or analysis.
· it’s aim is a light insertion in pre-existing environments.
· it preserves the investments already done
