Think what you will of Blizzard and World of Warcraft one thing is evident; the decision to open up the client's internals in a controlled manner via Lua is a huge departure from the industry standard and a huge boon for the end user. This is a step beyond what Blizzard's competitors have done with their XML layouts as the inclusion of Lua allows the behavior of the client, not just the look and feel, to be modified.
