Audio plugin pack created with quality and compatibility in mind. The plugins work in LADSPA-compatible, LV2-compatible and DSSI-compatible host applications (like Rosegarden or Ardour), groups of them can also be used as separate JACK clients with built in GTK+ GUI.

The pack contains the following plugins: flanger, reverb, multimode filter, tape delay, monophonic subtractive (VA) synthesizer, phaser, rotary speaker, tonewheel/solid state organ/string machine.

powerful & flexibe audio plugin suite

  by ensonic

The calf plugins provide 8 audio effect and 2 synthesizers. They come with many
faces. Whether you prefer ladspa, lv2, dssi or jack plugins all of this is
supported. What I like most is that the package comes with a nice tool called
calfjackhost. This gets you started immediately, just add the plugins and route them in e.g. qjackctrl. All plugins have nice control UIs. Some of the UIs are
much fancier what one is used to in the ... [More] Linux world. Take the "multi chorous" as
an example. Beside the usual control knob it should live animated displays of
frequency response and LFOs. Most plugins come with a bunch of presets to demo
the wide range of sounds they can produce.

Verdict: Definitely worth installing for Linux audio musicians. [Less]

    Calf 0.0.17 released

This is the first release from the New(tm) Improved(tm) two-person Calf development team.

First of all, it contains one new plugin, Compressor, which has been created by the new member, Thor Harald Johansen. The new plugin is intended to ... [More] provide quality and ease of use comparable to a professional compressor.

There are also major improvements in graphical interfaces of most of the plugins. The new interfaces use custom layouts, and some plugins have additional graphical displays to assist in parameter adjustments.

The compatibility with the emerging LV2 standard has been improved, and special emphasis was put on making GUI capabilities comparable to the standalone version. Unfortunately, only some hosts support the advanced user interface elements (as for now, at least Ardour 2.7 and zynjacku/lv2rack seem to be 100% compatible).

Aside from these major changes, there are minor improvements too. More Organ presets were added. The modulation effects gained a Dry Amount knob, making it possible to use them as Send effects too (the previous versions only worked as Insert effects). Large parts of the code has been cleaned up, and comments were added in many places. (0 comments) [Less]

    Calf 0.0.16.2 released

Version 0.0.16.2 has been released. No radical changes in core functionality this time. One new effect has been added, a multi-tap stereo chorus plugin, quite predictably called MultiChorus.

However, this release can potentially be ... [More] interesting to hard-core users of LV2-based modular synthesizers (particularly a modular synthesizer Ingen created by Dave Robillard), as it contains a completely new set of about 60 small LV2 plugins. Those plugins cover areas like logic gates, flip-flops, multiplexers, counters, arithmetic operators, basic oscillators and filters (1st and 2nd order) and similar "discrete" modules. They are of limited usefulness for now, so they are disabled by default. Use --enable-experimental configure option to enable them. For more information about Ingen, see http://drobilla.net/software/ingen/

NOTE: Version 0.0.16 had a serious bug that prevented LV2 and DSSI GUIs for MultiChorus from working correctly. It has been fixed in 0.0.16.2. (0 comments) [Less]

    Calf repository moved to Git

As an experiment, I've decided to migrate the source code repository to use Git distributed version control system instead of previously used Subversion.

The source code is now available at the following ... [More] address:

    git://repo.or.cz/calf.git

To get Calf from repository, use:

    git clone git://repo.or.cz/calf.git calf

To update to the newest version, use:

    git pull

The web interface for browsing changes in the repository is available at:

    http://repo.or.cz/w/calf.git

The migration has been done with lots of help from Nedko Arnaudov (thanks!). (0 comments) [Less]

    Calf 0.0.15 released

Version 0.0.15 has just been released. This release contains another set of improvements in existing plugins and the DSP and GUI libraries they are built on.

The organ synthesizer is now equipped with a new, frequency modulation-based ... [More] percussive section, with editable modulation keytrack curve (DSSI and JACK host only). The new percussive section has a polyphonic mode as well as 3 "old" monophonic modes. New presets have been added. UI controls have been rearranged to fit in lower screen resolution.

The rotary speaker plugin has been changed due to user feedback, the effect is much more subtle now and there is more control over the sound.

GUI improvements include knob usability fixes and new controls (keyboard, curve editor). It is easier to find the middle point in bipolar knobs due to added few-pixel "dead zone". It is now also possible to make fine adjustment to parameter values by holding SHIFT key while adjusting a parameter with a knob.

Also, a deadlock-on-close bug has been fixed in standalone JACK host version. (0 comments) [Less]

    Calf 0.0.14

Calf version 0.0.14 has been released today. No major changes, just small fixes and minor improvements here and there.

Stability is improved, Calf Organ and Monosynth should consume less memory and start faster. Knobs have been improved ... [More] (including new "endless" subtype). New preset handling makes upgrades easier. There are also 4 new built-in Monosynth presets.

This is (hopefully) the last version with small incremental improvements only. The next version (to be released in October) will likely contain major updates and a new plugin, but it will not be released until September or October. (0 comments) [Less]
