I find nmap a great tool to find out what is realyl on my network. The new service identification tool, which is unfortunately slow, actually connects to each open port and attempts to identify the service running. It is usually able to do this with great accuracy.
The ability to transform the xml report to a nice html report via a provides xslt file is quite nice for situations where a full nessus run is not necessary or

Nmap is an essential tool in any network administrator's collection. I've been contributing to Nmap for over 2 years, and it's been a great experience because the people who help out are very smart and enthusiastic. This makes for great discussions and ideas, which often end up in Nmap proper.
