Technical Issue Help : Do Gravatars ever update?

When I signed up for Ohloh I didn't have a Gravatar, but I like my Ohloh account so much that I went out and signed up for one. This was several months ago now, and I don't have an icon here yet... ... [More] does Ohloh update from Gravatar at any point? I kind of assumed that Gravatars were dynamic and just linked from their servers anyway. Must be wrong. [Less]

Feedback Forum : Something is wrong in kudo ranking land

I think that the resistance to change (which will primarily come from ppl whose rank drops due to the new algorithm) could be mitigated by some transparency. I'd like to see the changes happen sooner ... [More] rather than later, but as long as you guys put up a page explaining the changes and why you made them (possibly with a basic overview of the new algorithm) I would assume that the reception would be pretty good. Feedback Forum : Something is wrong in kudo ranking land

Hi Daniel, You're actually not going to get any argument from me about this. I agree, and have been thinking about this "problem" for some time. The culprit here is that the KudoRank system ... [More] calculates rankings based not just on direct Kudos, but also stacks. The system makes the (basically correct) assumption that if you have authored a project which is used by a lot of people, that should be worth something to your KudoRank. This was actually a pretty good system when Ohloh was new, and there weren't many Kudos in the system. It gave us a way to generate reasonable rankings in the absence of direct Kudos. Time has passed, and we now have enough Kudos in the system to generate good rankings. However the stack numbers are still being used, and as it turns out they overwhelm the effect of direct Kudos. The result is that being a major contributor to a popular project (like JUnit) puts you very high in the KudoRanks, and it dwarfs the effect of direct Kudos. The simple solution to this is to put less weight on the stack values, making them less important. The question is how much to scale them. Perhaps there's an argument to be made that only direct Kudos should count at all, and stack values should be ignored. After all, we only used stack values in the first place to "bootstrap" reasonable rankings when the system was brand new. I'm willing to "phase out" the stack values, or at least scale them to a much smaller value. The question becomes how much do we want to scale them back, and how quickly do we want to bring in the change. This will shake up the leaderboard considerably, which has been stable for a long time. I don't know if it's better to do it all at once or phase it in over time. I also don't want to be guilty of changing the "rules of the game" to pick my preferred "winners" -- but I do think most open source folks would agree that the current rankings are out of whack, and something should be done. Anyway, I'm just rambling now. I agree in principal; I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. Thoughts are welcome. [Less]

Suggestions for Ohloh 2.0 : Search Projects by "mostly used" language

This isn't exactly what you want Ben, but it's close: http://www.ohloh.net/projects/search?q=java Basically go to the projects index page and search on the primary language you want. The ability to ... [More] filter projects in a more fine-grained manner (by language, os platform, purpose, etc) is a feature we'd like to add at some point. [Less]

Suggestions for Ohloh 2.0 : Search Projects by "mostly used" language

I think this would be a really useful idea, for example: I want a list of all the popular Java based open source projects. If this functionality already exists, i cant find it.

Technical Issue Help : autocompletion problems

Hey, I'm using firefox 2.0.0.11 on Ubuntu gutsy. When I try to fill out any form field that has project autocompletion enabled (like searching for projects in the stackbuilder, or under Tools > ... [More] Compare Projects, I am unable to type projects correctly. For example, it will not allow me to type mysql, or firefox - they do not appear in the list. If I type 'firefox' I only get one option - 'firefox openwebfolder plugin'. If I type 'firefox ' - with one space nothing changes. If I type 'firefox ' - with two spaces, then suddenly I get a lot more results - including 'mozilla firefox' - what I originally wanted. If I try typing 'mozilla' I don't get firefox either until I type 'mozilla f'. If I type 'mysql' I get 10 options, non of which is actually just mysql. If I type it with one space, I get four options, non of which is just mysql. If I type it with two spaces I get back the first 10 options. This problem also happens with Perl. This is not as useful as I would like. [Less]

Technical Issue Help : How do I edit the aliiases table?

Ok, thanks. I can't really take credit for any of the genius of "Be the Wumpus," only the programming and sound effects, and uh, voice "acting", if you want to call it that, heh. Yhere's another ... [More] game, "In the Pit", which "Be the Wumpus" is modelled after, which I'd read about, but have never played, as it requires an OS and controller which I don't have. To satisfy my curiousity, and just for the fun of it, I made my own version of the game. In the pit is here, in case you happen to have a windows machine, and wired xbox 360 controller: http://www.studiohunty.com/itp/ [Less]

Technical Issue Help : Lost Kudos

I searched for my name in ohloh, found myself and saw that I had 8 kudos. I then pressed the 'this is me' button, but I didn't have an account yet, so I signed up and repeated the process (pressing ... [More] 'this is me'). Now I've lost those kudos. That doesn't seem right, does it? [Less]
