Created an ubuntu virtual machine this weekend on parallels. Ran into the same problem that Colin Charles wrote about (http://www.bytebot.net/blog/archives/2008/05/04/sun-xvm-virtualbox-is-released) having with virtualbox (.. kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU0:6 ..). Had a brain freeze and thought I needed to boot from CD to fix. Instead, just edit the virtual machine's boot order: in Parallel's goto Edit/Virtual Machine/Booting/Boot Sequence and pick the third option andy — about 1 month ago tags: VirtualBox OSE,Ubuntu,VirtualBox OSE,Ubuntu,Ubuntu,VirtualBox OSE,Ubuntu

The BEST Linux desktop

    by acoliver

I prefer Linux for my development platform. After using Mac OS X for awhile (lots of projectors, reconfiguring X inconvenient), when I switched back to primarily coding I needed my Linux back. I've always found Red Hat's packaging system to be pretty frustrating (although it has gotten better). I couldn't manage to get Fedora Core 5 installed on my MacBookPro (Core Duo) so I tried Ubuntu. There was a minor hiccup with the boot loader (which ... [More] is more cause Apple is weird) but the community information made working around it a snap! Ubuntu leans a bit more towards the pragmatic side of the wider Linux community so chances are that your computer will be fully operational just by booting from the CD, you'll obviously want to install. Installing Ubuntu, Mozilla Firefox, OpenOffice and Mozilla Thunderbird produces a fully functional desktop. Obviously I'm bigger in to the development tools but this is the first Linux I'd dare suggest to an end user. [Less]

Awesome Community

  by benpage26

I use Ubuntu because of the awesome community behind it.

Ubuntu was easy to get started with as the live CD installed automatically, and while I installed it i was browsing the internet. :D

Also, if you are a tweaker like me, the possibilities are endless and the community is always there to help you out and give you advice.

    Andres Rodriguez: Ubuntu Presentation!

On November the 21st and November the 22nd, there will be the “I Free Software Conference and Installation Festival” at National University of San Agustin, Arequipa - Peru. It is a great pleasure for me to announce that the Ubuntu ... [More] Peruvian LoCo Team is going to participate giving a presentation of “Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex”. Btw, I’m the one who’s giving it =). I’m also going to talk about “HA-Clusters in Ubuntu”, which is a topic related to my thesis.

Well, anyways, It is also great to announce that Richard Stallman will be participating on the 22nd, giving a conference about “Human Rights for Software Users”. This event will gather almost 250 people. So, if someone from Arequipa - Perú gets to read this post, I hope to see you there!

Btw, The National University of San Agustin is migrating to Ubuntu… So, it is following UNMSN example. Well, wish me luck because after tomorrow, many people will be turning to Ubuntu :).

    Jorge Castro: Hassle the HOF

Jono recently unveiled the Ubuntu Hall of Fame.

To sum it up: the community is full of great contributors from all around the world, and we want to showcase that, so check it out and thank someone.

Each box has a little (i) icon in ... [More] it, which will take you to information about that part of Ubuntu if you want to get started and start your path to greatness. People have pointed out that it is missing some parts - I assure you that we are aware that things like the forums and Answers on lp are missing and they are on the TODO list.

The "Upstream Bug Rockstars" box is related to our upstream report, showing which projects have great bug linkages to upstream projects, so if you've been forwarding and linking bugs, thanks! [Less]

Emma Jane Hogbin: You are the r0xx0r!

I don't get a lot of fan mail. But I'm pretty sure I just got the world's best intentioned, but poorly thought out, fan letter:

Love yer site, your Drupal work, and omfg, you're even into the Ubuntu doc-team. I think that is the grandest ... [More] , and I'll likely gawk atcha in DC during DrupalCon where a 3D screensaver / wallpaper, and general graphic homage will be born out due to a slick time lapse photo montage shall ensue, et. al. ;->
Keep on rockin' in the free world. :-)

The identity of this person will forever be known to only two people (me and "him"), so please don't ask. Although I am a little bit creeped out by this email, this Public Service Announcement isn't about making anyone feel uncomfortable. (I've sent my fair share of weird emails that have been fuelled by inside jokes and caffeine and not at all fuelled by sanity, so I'm hardly one to judge. This person has gotten a quick reply back and knows how I feel about the email.)

This blog post is actually a specific request to please never "gawk" at me from a distance. Say hello and introduce yourself! I verge on crowd-phobic. I hate having to interact with a room full of pre-clustered people. Delivering a presentation to a few hundred people? No problem. Facilitating huge discussion groups? Love it! But I'd rather have teeth pulled than "work a room." So the next time we're both together in the same room, please come up and introduce yourself. I'll be the one sitting in the corner noodling with tech to avoid having to break into a cluster of people and say hi. [Less]

    Justin Dugger: New Ubuntu Store

Seemingly in response to an earlier post of mine, Canonical has recently launched a US based store. Since they've gone to the trouble to risk taking my advice, I suppose it's only fair that I shill a bit for them.

Prices before were close to ... [More] 40 dollars for a shirt after taxes and shipping. They're now closer to 25, and I think I'll put in an order at that price.

The store's new, so it's not yet perfected -- they ship a fun set of stickers via UPS Ground, a 7 dollar charge for something that could probably be sent for 42 cents. That's okay, system76 still offers stickers for the price of a SASE (?) as a draw (and sales lead) to their store.

One product suggestion: Aluminum case badges. [Less]
