Paint.NET is free image editing and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools.
It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it.
Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing.
The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality.

Rick,
Keep up the good work. Your program is very fast on my quad-core computer, with .NET installed. I am really impressed with its optimization for multiple processors. In Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood podcast, they talked about how much effort the multi-threading took for you to code. Your effort really paid off in the performance. Nice work!
The capabilities of Paint.NET really surprise me over and over. I use

In the latest update, I changed the canvas background in Paint.NET so that it was a solid color instead of a grey gradient. The rationale for this change was based on a comment made by forum member "mkidd":

This version has a new Posterize adjustment, Intersect selection mode, and dramatically faster selection editing performance (add, subtract, intersect). Oh, and the usual crop of miscellaneous bug fixes, of course!

In my first post about Paint.NET v4, I mentioned that I was learning a lot about C# 3.0 and .NET 3.5. One of the things I’m absolutely falling head-over-heels for is extension methods.
One use of these is to add utility functionality on to existing classes that you don’t own the implementation for. As an [...]
I can’t make these things up, folks. I honestly feel that if someone really wants to do business with you, they’ll at least do more than 3 seconds of research and get your product’s name correct. It should be easy to figure out that the product hosted at http://www.getpaint.net/ is called Paint.NET, and not "Get [...]
It’s really not as exciting as it sounds unfortunately I’ve been quiet on the subject for some time, though, and wanted to put out some information.
For a long time I debated whether I should fully refactor Paint.NET, or do it from scratch. I finally decided on the latter, and have finally been able to [...]
