Openfire (formerly Wildfire) is a real-time collaboration (RTC) server dual-licensed under the Open Source GPL and commercially. It supports instant messaging, group chat, and VoIP and uses the only widely adopted open protocol for RTC, XMPP (also called Jabber). Openfire is incredibly easy to setup and adminster, but offers rock-solid security and performance.

Use Openfire in your organization as a more secure and feature-rich alternative to the consumer IM networks. Or, replace your existing EIM server with a more open, easier to use, and much less expensive solution.

Openfire is feature rich with wonderful support

  by Daniel Henninger

I'll start out by saying I'm a tad biased, as I've been working on a plugin for Openfire for some time now and have had a lot of great interactions with them. That said, I've looked into just about every XMPP server I've seem come around in my day. I've posted a couple of reviews of all of the servers as well. Openfire has always had the best administrative interface IMO, and I've found the code very easy to follow, makes sense, and has great ... [More] well documented code that's available online. I still think ejabberd beats openfire in sheer speed, but java 6 helped with that a lot. Generally I mostly appreciate the friendly nature of the developers and helpfulness in the forums from them and misc other folk. The plugin architecture is -very- powerful and generally if there's a way for the architecture to be improved, the devs are receptive to improving it.

So far the only other server that I haven't tried is Tigase. Aiming to give that a shot in the near future.

Great work folk! [Less]

Openfire

  by flaviocarmo

Openfire is a great server. Im using him since it was called JiveServer (Wildfire after, now openfire). About 1 years of constant upgrade, my user database was storaged in a MySql DB. However, im migrating to integrate with my Active Directory, to better user/password management. It is stable, flexible, easy to install and configure. Im from Brazil, and the localization option is 100% correct, like the Spark Client. The JiveSoftware is a great ... [More] company with great products. OpenFire (Commercial version) has great other resources, like VOIP and Client Branding. Try it, or you will regreat. [Less]
