Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux.

Debian, not just another Linux distribution

  by lping

I've installed Debian servers in all the organizations I was working for, for the past 10 years. Debian is not just like RedHat or SLES. Debian is the only Linux distribution with which I was able to provide four 9 availability (99.99%) on standalone servers (no clusters).

This is not only a Kernel problem, it is also related to the way the packages are maintained. Most of the updates are running moothly without services interruption. ... [More] Several important migrations have been held other the years with a pretty good success.

The next goal would be to certify the distribution for several hardware (like SANs), to allow the use of Debian in some professional environments (datacenters).

Note that Debian is the only distribution with which HP is making a significant amount of money, providing support and certified material. [Less]

DSA-1577 gforge - insecure temporary files

Stephen Gran and Mark Hymers discovered that some scripts run by GForge,
a collaborative development tool, open files in write mode in a potentially
insecure manner. This may be exploited to overwrite arbitary files on the
    local system.

DSA-1576 openssh - predictable random number generator

The recently announced vulnerability in Debian's openssl package
(DSA-1571-1, CVE-2008-0166) indirectly affects OpenSSH. As a result,
all user and host keys generated using broken versions of the openssl
package must be considered untrustworthy, even after the openssl update
    has been applied.

    Other news

    Lior Kaplan reported,
that he finished triage of over 300 bugs reported
against the iceweasel / firefox packages. Of those 300 bugs only 70 are still valid
for a version of firefox shipped in a Debian release.

debimg, a new software to replace debian-cd

debimg is a software designed to replace debian-cd. Its current feature set is
very limited, but building single disks for i386 and amd64 is possible (netinst
disks build in about 5 seconds. It still misses many features like disk sets
    and multi-arch.
