wanbooks

Primary Language: Python Licensed as: GNU General Public License 2.0

Our goal is to create a web application to allow anyone to turn their personal book collection into a lending library. There are other implementations of the basic idea, but WANDERING BOOKS takes the concept further: it will not be just a personal ... [More] library manager, but rather a collective library manager and it will bring forth a 'Book Commons'. WHAT IS A COLLECTIVE LIBRARY?It's the collection of all books belonging to you and to your friends which are available for lending. The catalog of such a library is the union of the catalog of each user's personal collection plus her/his friends personal collections. Therefore, this catalog is different for each user who has a different set of friends. THE BOOK COMMONSUsers will be able to 'liberate' some their books, which then become part of a 'Book Commons', and available to all users. A liberated book can be held by anyone as long as no one else wants to borrow it. If you are holding a liberated book and another person asks for it, you are required to pass it on within a certain period. CURRENT STATUSA Grok-based version of Wandering Books is under development. A test site has been chosen: the Reserva Cultural project at USP Leste. We are using the QuestionPro system to perform user studies among current and potential users of the Reserva Cultural. FOR DEVELOPERSIf you want to play with the code, do: svn checkout http://wanbooks.googlecode.com/svn/groo/trunk/ grooWhere the second 'groo' is a dir under your local Horde directory (it will be created if it doesn't exist). Commiters should use: svn checkout https://wanbooks.googlecode.com/svn/groo/trunk/ groo --username loginWhere 'login' is your Google login (for me, it's ramalho). The password is that mysterious Google-generated SVN password. [Less]
