This adds plenty of fun things: The ability to do commands through Halo's chat, if the player is a registered admin (by cd hash); Custom dev commands, such as teleport, teamswitch, cmdfile, along with others; Player control, such as 'zombie' mode to switch players automatically, and ... [More] handicaps for ammo, health, speed, etc, to individual players (also recognized by cd hash); Also, on the server's computer itself, it has interactive windows to the server to monitor players' info, and other things on the server. In the simplest sense, THPS Dedicated Server is a dedicated server for the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Tony Hawk's Underground, and later series of video games. It is designed from the ground up from clean reverse engineering techniques used to understand the network code of the series by ... [More] it's modding community. Currently the only way to run a multi player server for any of the series's games is to have a human player run the game and administrate it themselves. Not only that, but the included server feature set in-game is quite limited. Through the dedicated server we hope to not only allow unmanned servers, but to extend the feature set and overall multi player experience of the series. Some specific goals we have set are to not only make our server mirror the capabilities of the traditional THPS server but to greatly surpass them by integrating a powerful and flexible server scripting system. The server will be written from the start to be extremely portable and to work on many platforms. We are using ANSI C and the GNU tool chain for the entirety of the project development. The server will either be reliant on WinSock or Berkeley sockets, depending on it's platform and the rest will be either original coding or functions found in the standard C runtime. The project is relatively simple and we expect to keep it very minimalistic in it's core feature set, but to make it expansible through a scripting plugin system. We haven't decided on a scripting system at this point as that is a later goal of the project, but likely candidates include Python, Lua, or a custom syntax designed by us. One prospective goal may be to make our server work with multiple game platforms such as allowing Playstation 2 based players to play with PC based players. This has already been done otherwise so it is likely to be a feature of the server at a later stage of development. We also expect to allow such advanced capabilities like parsing player chat for scripting or server commands, allowing designated server administrators, permanent bans, and a wide variety of other possibilities. To sum it up, we are hoping to make the online experience much greater and to utilize the true capabilities of the game's network engine by expanding it's feature set. By keeping the project open source we hope to encourage other creative ideas to enhance the multi player experience and perhaps revive a once thriving online community. [Less]
