This software has been designed to serve as a way for South Africans to interactively learn South African Sign Language (hereafter referred to as SASL) with the use of a computer and some form of video recording device (such as a webcam). The program works by showing you a prerecorded video clip of ... [More] a SASL speaker demonstrating a word and its use in a phrase, and a caricature depicting the meaning of this word and phrase, along with written text. You will then be able to watch yourself attempting the word and phrase and record your attempt. Afterwards, you can play back the recording, comparing it with the database example video of the SASL speaker, taking note of your expression as well as your movements. Through this software we aim to help make SASL both more standardised and more accessible to learners in our country. Currently, there are several slightly different dialects of sign language used in South Africa and this is probably contributed to by the lack of easy-to-use sign language teaching resources. This software will present 'standard' SASL to learners and function as a reference for SASL veterans. [Less]
