The FreeType Project

FreeType 2 is a software font engine that is designed to be small, efficient, highly customizable and portable while capable of producing high-quality output (glyph images). Note that FreeType 2 is a font service and doesn't provide APIs to perform higher-level features, like text layout or graphics processing (e.g., colored text rendering, "hollowing", etc.). However, it greatly simplifies these tasks by providing a simple, easy to use and uniform interface to access the content of font files. Pango

Pango is a library for laying out and rendering of text, with an emphasis on internationalization. Pango can be used anywhere that text layout is needed, though most of the work on Pango so far has been done in the context of the GTK+ widget toolkit. Pango forms the core of text and font handling for GTK+-2.x.

XeTeX

A typesetting system by Jonathan Kew and SIL International based on a merger of Donald Knuth's TeX system with Unicode and modern font technologies (multiple languages, support for AAT and OpenType advanced font features, trivial font installation).

Fontmatrix

LASi

libLASi is library that provides a C++ stream output interface ( with operator << ) for creating PostScript documents that can contain characters from any of the script and symbol blocks supported in Unicode and by the Pango layout engine.

PascalType

PascalType is a library which is meant for reading (and writing) true type and open font files.

Tsukurimashou

Font meta-family, multiple styles, for Japanese, English, and Korean, made with Metafont. Full coverage of hiragana, katakana, hangul, and Latin. Partial coverage of grade-school kanji.
