Kraken is a continuation of the Openfire IM Gateway plugin, but in a way that works for any XMPP server. It provides a way for XMPP users to log into, and communicate through, their legacy IM accounts such as AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and friends.
Karaka is a Skype/XMPP gateway that connects the Skype and XMPP clouds. Implementing XEP-0100 for gateway support, XEP-0045 for multi-user chats and XEP-0144 for roster exchange, Karaka is a scalable distributed standards-compliant XMPP transport able to be hosted across a cluster of machines.
Pizzja allows you to control your Jabber account. In this aspect it's a Jabber client. Its particularity is that you don't control it using a graphical or text UI, but rather via the XMPP protocol (component protocol, XEP 114). In this aspect it's a Jabber component, or gateway.
