WatMapIntroductionWatMap is a global water quality, treatment, and sanitation map written using Python and the Django web application framework. This project sits at the intersection of science, activism, ICT4D, citizen science, health, and development. Wanted:Still looking for people with the ... [More] following skills/interests, in particular: data visualization scientific uses of open mapping platforms creating mapping/GIS services web interface UI web application development (Django / Python) cell phone application development ...and more System ExplanationMore generally, WatMap is a distributed, low-cost, and easy-to-understand system for helping communities around the world understand their water quality, treatment options available if problems are found, organizations and experts to contact to improve or treat their water sources, as well as general information on water problems and what they mean for human health. Similarly, this system will raise awareness of water quality and sanitation around the world--both in rural and city areas alike--as well as provide data for those seeking to implement treatment solutions for those in need. Water Quality Testing in the WorldMethods to measure and map global drinking water quality have, until now, required technical training and sophisticated infrastructure, which millions lack. The Worldwide Water Quality and Sanitation Map (WatMap) is a potentially revolutionary open-source geo-tagged database and education suite designed to breach this barrier. It empowers communities to test the quality of their water resources using our simple and easily accessible test kits. Its interactive database then helps communities access appropriate infrastructure by connecting them with the necessary resources. The data compiled by WatMap indicates potential regions of water-related health concerns and thus has significant implications for both policy and scholarly research. Finally, WatMap encourages innovations in the arena of water and sanitation by enabling researchers to query for regional water quality parameters to serve as guidelines for the development and implementation of locally-targeted intervention technologies.
