This is a project that I was working on, that did not get completed. The code allows for the creation and basic management of virtual machines via a web (AJAX) interface. The code uses the Java ... [More] bindings published for the Citrix XEN product. The project was discontinued due to the fact that the Citrix API does not allow for the assignment of static IP addresses at the time of creation. This is possible with open source XEN but the Java bindings were unavailable. There are alot of API overlaps so this code could be used with open source XEN Java bindings with a bit of tweaking. SimScale provides a method for managing multiple virtualization platforms, including Xen, OpenVZ and VMWare. It provides a means for automating the process of building and managing virtual machines. ... [More] So for example, as an entity that requires a large number of test systems to be created to simulate load, Simscale can be used to create, start, run a testing application and destroy all instances that were created once the testing is complete. SimScale can also be used to manage clusters of machines. By allowing multiple instances of a virtual machine to be created and deployed, SimScale facilitates load-balanced deployments. SimScale can also be used to sell automatically provisioned services to customers, once a SOAP client has been hooked into the billing system action queue. SimScale uses Java for server-side and provisioning management. [Less]

Many software development projects suffer from infrastructure based problems in addition as well. Large software shops have their dedicated team for setting up and maintaining project servers (i.e. an ... [More] svn server, a bug tracking system, a document management system, etc.) but small and medium size companies and teams have to set up most of these by their own. SF.net and more recently Google Code deliver the basics for a project, but having a set of local servers with many features is best. Saturn-Server is a Xen-based consolidation of many software engineering tools, running on a set of virtualized Linux instances. All of these tools are open-source. But once Saturn is working, any component can be replaced easily with an existing commercial tool, such as those from Borland of IBM Rational. [Less]
