Netdisco is a network management application targeted at large corporate and university networks. Data is collected into a Postgres database using SNMP and presented with a clean web interface using Mason. Designed for moderate to large networks ... [More] , configuration information and connection data for network devices are retrieved by SNMP. With Netdisco you can locate the switch port of an end-user system by IP or MAC address. Data is stored using a SQL database for scalability and speed. Layer-2 topology protocols such as CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) optionally provides automatic discovery of the network topology. The network is inventoried by both device model and operating system (like IOS). Netdisco uses router ARP tables and L2 switch MAC forwarding tables to locate nodes on physical ports and track them by their IP addresses. For each node, a time stamped history of the ports it has visited and the IP addresses it has used is maintained. Netdisco gets all its data, including topology information, with SNMP polls and DNS queries. It does not use CLI access and has no need for privilege passwords. Security features include a wire-side Wireless Access Point (AP) locator. The project is supported by a community of open-source developers, headed by Eric Miller, Bill Fenner, and Max Baker. [Less]

AutoCfgBackup is primarily intented for a larger network. As soon as you have a certain, maybe even growing number of network devices to manage, you need to take care of the configuration; you’ll want to have each device’s config in place in case ... [More] of a failure, configuration mistake, whatever. AutoCfgBackup will run from cron. It will download configuration from all network devices, which you configured for backup. There’s also the possibility to copy the device’s config by some other means and let AutoCfgBackup use the pre-downloaded file. After that, it will compare the newly downloaded config with the latest saved config. If changes occur, it will archive the new config. Otherwise, it will continue. Comparing files is done with md5sum, so it’s expected to work with both binary and ascii text files. AutoCfgBackup can also use filters when comparing configs. Often, configs contain lines which change automatically everyday and which don’t represent a real config change. This includes “config created at” timestamps, cisco’s “ntp clock-period”, and some others. You can define filters for specific devices yourself. More information is in the sample config file. For downloading, AutoCfgBackup supports Cisco devices with the CISCO-CONFIG-COPY MIB, as well as HTTP (with optional authentication), FTP, telnet and pre-downloaded files. For archiving, I implemented 2 ways: you can either use rcs, which is the prefered method for text files, or a roll-over system, where you keep a backlog of old files, renaming them to .1, .2, .3, etc. Just like what logrotate does to your syslogs. AutoCfgBackup also supports notification of changes by email, in diff (+/-) style, so you get a daily overview of config changes which occured in your network. Good to keep up with what your colleagues are doing all day! [Less]
