skenotype

Skenotype enables Chinese users to input pinyin (Chinese romanization) in syllables, by holding down several letter keys at a time. Inspired by stenographic typing, this piece of work is designed for computer users to type in a similar way on a generic PC keyboard. The general purpose of this ... [More] program is to prove what could be done to bring the method that has been developed for stenography to our typing experience on computers, rather than to achieve a typing speed as high as that of stenographic typing. It uses a low-level keyboard hook to trap key events, and then sends converted key codes representing pinyin to the underlying IME. Keyboard layouts and conversion rules used by Skenotype can be configured with plain-text configuration files. Thus users can easily customize Skenotype for their spelling preferences or for a specific IME.
