For linux, there aren't really a good number of really good projects that exist for synchronizing a palm device. pilot-xfer is one of the better libraries that exist to allow one to synchronize ... [More] the basic stuff with the palm. Unfortunately integration easily with my workflow has been difficult to say the least. Google calendar for the calendar + emacs (org-mode) for the to-do have been really difficult to combine. Instead of creating a small project just to hack my way through my specific needs, I wanted to create a utility that can better synchronize for a larger number of people and allow plugins to be created for various applications.
