We are developing a web based 'Green Map' for Glasgow, Scotland. The Green Map initiative aims to help people develop eco-friendly maps, both paper- and web-based, to help people make the the best ... [More] use of the reuse facilities in their city. There is already a paper-based Glasgow green map in production and we aim to leverage it with this addition community resource. The online map will be a system relying on the Google Maps API (though the code will make this interchangeable with other online mapping sites). We aim to have a very visual searchable interface where members of the community can search within their designated areas. The map is initially aimed at the poorest demographic in Glasgow. As this map is being developed as part of a community effort it will be licensed under an open source licence. The theme of Imagine Cup 2009 is to imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems. But it’s ironic that technology is one of the toughest problems itself. The rapid pace of ... [More] technological change has resulted in large quantities of electronic equipments being added to the waste stream. The optimistic part is that it’s the technology itself that can be used to control E-waste. Using this platform we try to build a dynamic web-application that can be used to manage flooding e-waste. We know that most major computer hardware retailers have some kind of “product take-back” programs where the owners can send their old hardware back to the manufacturer for processing, recycling and disposal. Similarly many mobile phone companies also accept to recycle old phones at no charge. Online E-waste Recycling is a web-application oriented at centralizing this process. So that both consumers and manufacturer are benefitted and the e-waste is minimized. It requires manufacturers to submit the Unique Hardware ID along with the essential customer contact details in the system. The consumers can use it to contact the manufacturer for recycling, or selling it to another consumer who wish to use it as is. The site features dynamic and interactive graphics on worldwide e-waste statistics. The site also includes a list of suggested steps to prevent E-waste production, easier recycling and educational information to raise awareness about environmental. The interface is designed for simplicity. Through this web-application we hope to change people’s mindset of throwing away of old gadgets to purchase newer ones. This answers the UN Millennium Goal of “environmental sustainability”. The Online e-waste recycling is concerned at contributing to a world where technology solves problems created by itself. [Less]
