LaTeX

LaTeX is a document preparation system for high-quality typesetting. It is most often used for medium-to-large technical or scientific documents but it can be used for almost any form of publishing.

The FreeType Project

FreeType 2 is a software font engine that is designed to be small, efficient, highly customizable and portable while capable of producing high-quality output (glyph images). Note that FreeType 2 is a font service and doesn't provide APIs to perform higher-level features, like text layout or graphics processing (e.g., colored text rendering, "hollowing", etc.). However, it greatly simplifies these tasks by providing a simple, easy to use and uniform interface to access the content of font files. DejaVu fonts

The DejaVu fonts are a font family based on the Bitstream Vera Fonts. Its purpose is to provide a wider range of characters while maintaining the original look and feel.

Scribus

Scribus is a desktop page layout program with the aim of producing commercial grade output in PDF and Postscript.

teTeX

teTeX is a complete TeX distribution for UNIX compatible systems, maintained by me, Thomas Esser. It is based on the web2c distribution which is currently maintained by Olaf Weber. teTeX has been officially declared unmaintained by it's current maintainer, and users are suggested to change to TeX Live instead.

TeX Live

TeX Live is an easy way to get up and running with TeX. It provides a comprehensive TeX system with binaries for most flavors of Unix, including GNU/Linux, and also Windows. Blueprint

Blueprint is a CSS framework, which aims to cut down on your development time. It gives you a solid foundation to build your project on top of, with an easy-to-use grid, sensible typography, useful plugins, and even a stylesheet for printing.

GNU LilyPond Music Typesetter

LilyPond is a music typesetter. It produces beautiful sheet music using a description file as input. LilyPond is part of the GNU Project.

FontForge

FontForge is an outline font editor that lets you create your own Postscript, TrueType, OpenType, CID-keyed, multi-master, CFF, SVG, and bitmap (BDF) fonts, or edit existing ones. It also lets you convert one format to another, and has support for many Macintosh font formats.

XeTeX

A typesetting system by Jonathan Kew and SIL International based on a merger of Donald Knuth's TeX system with Unicode and modern font technologies (multiple languages, support for AAT and OpenType advanced font features, trivial font installation).
