CharacterGenCharacterGen is for writers to quickly generate large numbers of filler characters with basic features like race, gender, eye and hair color, hair style, etc. In addition, it is flexible enough to make quite complete character physical profiles for use on primary and secondary ... [More] characters. These profiles can be output as plain text, xhtml, or in CharacterGen's native XML format. Program HistoryI originally wrote CharacterGen in Visual Basic 6, teaching myself the code as I went along, and hosted the program as an open source project at SourceForge.Net. CharacterGen v1.0.0 was released on June 10, 2005, after which I put the project more or less on the shelf. More recently, I returned to school, intending to get a degree as an applications programmer. Having completed the VB.Net portion of this course, I've decided to return to CharacterGen and re-code it from the ground up in VB.Net, and chose Google Code to host the project, unhappy with SourceForge's overly complex and generally useless features. Additionally, returning to school to learn to program opens the opportunity to work on another program that I have long wished to work on, World Binder. One of the features that I would like to work into that is direct import of the profiles generated by CharacterGen. Project Status2007-09-02 - For those that think the project has died; it hasn't, I've just been waiting for someting to come, and that has finally done so. My school has updated its courses to use Visual Studio 2005, and as part of that, I've gotten a copy of it as well. I've known that this was coming for awhile now, and I've decided to upgrade CharacterGen to the newer version of Visual Basic. While this means that a lot of the project progress will be reset, it also means less code in general, and better long-term maintainability as I'll be able to use some of the more advanced features of VB05. I've added a build of the last VB2003 version of CharacterGen to the downloads, and expect to be back up to speed fairly quickly. Guests and users are welcomed to begin joining the general mailing list if you have questions or comments, and of course all of the code is available in the SVN repository. A Note From the DeveloperAs suggested above, and at the World Binder project, I am a writer myself, and so both of my current project ideas are, of course, related to writing. Both are tools made to address small, but often surprisingly difficult aspects of writing. CharacterGen's scope is limited only to characters, while World Binder's scope is that of consistent story world, but in the end, they are both simple ideas. [Less]

World BinderWorld Binder is being developed with a simple goal in mind - to help authors to create, manage, and maintain notes relating to a story world. There will be provisions for, among other things, characters, nations, races, species, geography, history, mythology, gods, religions, and magic. ... [More] Beyond the actual note pages, there will be the ability to search by a variety of criteria, cross-link related information, and print batches of information. At this point in the planning stages, while I expect there to be other features, these are the major ones that I can be sure of. Project StatusAt the moment, World Binder is in a planning stage, and has had no actual working code completed as of yet. Currently, I have no true time line for beginning programming; I intend to take my time and plan out as much as possible. World Binder is also pending the completion of CharacterGen 2. As the ground work is completed, I'll begin to add a more complete feature chart to the project site. Do you think you have a good suggestion? Join the General discussion list and let me hear about it. A Note from the DeveloperI am a writer myself, and am quite familiar with the difficulty in keeping track of all the notes that can rapidly build up during the setup and evolution of a story world. World Binder is a tool written to help myself keep track of the endless bits and pieces of world framework, as well as to gain experience with programming in general. I'll fully admit that it will be rough around the edges, but I also believe that it will be a useful tool. [Less]

This project provides hosting for a variety of Google Gadgets created by David Earle. The gadgets available will change as I come up with new ideas; ideas will come when they come. Current project goal: a daily word counter for writers to track their writing progress.
