Update

The beta period expired. Due to low uptake, we axed this feature.

Ohloh is beta-testing a new feature: a web-based IRC client. This allows Ohloh users to interact in real-time with other open source fans. It's important to remember that Ohloh is not hosting the chat channels - we're only connecting you to existing IRC servers. Be careful with your privacy: never hand out your phone number, credit card, etc...

What's IRC?

Wikipedia has the answer.

I'm new to this - how should I get started?

Here are 2 links to get you up to speed with IRC:

I don't like this web interface!

Fine - don't use it! While you're free to download any IRC client you like, consider helping out and letting us know what feature(s) you miss or that you find annoying and give us a chance to meet your needs.

Background

The feature was motivated by the observation that many open source users either don't know about or don't understand how IRC works. To save them time and effort, we decided to offer a pre-configured chat client connected to an appropriate channel.

How do I configure it?

You don't! Ohloh automatically connects to the appropriate channel for a project.

Its still in beta

Remember - this is a beta feature, which means it might be missing some polish or it might not work all the time. Also, we'd love any feedback you might have...

so does this connect to the project's IRC room or ohloh's internal IRC room?

The project's IRC. We've had some requests for an Ohloh channel too - but we haven't gotten around to it.

Where do one set the irc channel of a project. I would like to let this be available for some projects that I'm involved in (supertux and envbot)

I apologize for the delay. Due to low usage/uptake, we killed this feature.
